Reinstalling MacPorts. I wonder how many times I've done this in my life? Whatever the answer, it never seems to get any faster.

Aquarius Records had their top 10 list for the week of October 22nd in Rolling Stone recently:

And there's not a single thing on there I've heard of.

After many many months of procrastination, I finally have all the pieces to implement a relatively secure backup system.

Two main drives: One internal 200 GB boot drive which stores just about everything, and one external 1 TB drive which stores photos.

Each of those drives gets cloned weekly using SuperDuper. The photo drive – the one with the irreplaceable stuff on it – will now be cloned to one of two 1 TB enclosure-less drives, connected to the computer using a dock. Allowing me to keep a recent clone both off and on site at all times.

Both of those drives will also get backed up via Time Machine to a Drobo, and all the photos will be backed up again to the same Drobo using Aperture's vault system.

Definitely not a perfect system, but it should be relatively easy to maintain and protect me (and my photos) against most conceivable sorts of failure. Comments and suggestions welcome, of course.

    How are you backing up?

After an overly long weekend of moving furniture and books, almost all of my possessions are now in the same place. For the first time in I don't know how many years.

And *damn* is my apartment full.

David Eric Davis collects his bellybutton lint and takes pretty photos of it.
