What is the point of the Democratic National Convention when everything is pretty much already decided? Can anyone explain it to me?

Tradition. And just to have a big party and get people excited. I find that most of us on social networks do not understand why, but many people do get very enthusiastic about rallies and conventions. They might ask "Why do you have blogging conventions or networking conventions or hacking conventions?"

Is everything decided? Aren't they going to try to get back those folks who wanted Hilary but now are going to vote for McCain? I suspect there are a lot out there.

But wasn't the purpose of this convention to elect the Democratic nominee? Isn't that pretty much a moot point now?

The purpose of the convention is marketing

I like to think of it as quadrennial pageantry.
